Before we could fit the luxury vinyl tiles, we had to prepare the subfloor. This involved using Ardex NA self-levelling smoothing underlayment which was applied onto a concrete floor after priming. It is important that this is done on uneven floors to ensure that they are smooth and level, creating the perfect base for other types of flooring to be applied on top. Our clients decided to have Aran Oak from the Karndean Knight Tile range. The planks have a grain design that brings out the natural look of wood, so you can have flooring that appears to be real wood but that is made from vinyl, saving you money but giving you a product that is hardwearing and long lasting.
One of the advantages of this type of flooring is that you can experiment with different plank layouts to get either a contemporary or classic look. With this project, we fitted the planks at 45 degrees. We worked up to and around the kitchen units as well as fitting up to the skirting boards. We included a plank border and inlay strip of blonde oak between the border and field. Including an inlay strip can highlight a feature such as a fireplace, or in this case, the kitchen divider. An inlay strip can also define the perimeter of the room.
